My initial
introduction to painting was in oils by an
artist/teacher who accepted me where I
was at that time, never having put oil
paints on a canvas. He helped me by
pushing me to look. He would say,
"Put down what you see, like that
dark "s" shaped form in the
shadow." "Forget the color,
think value." "Value brings
out the form, not color." These
comments I heard over and over from
Gregory Lysun at the Westchester Art
Workshop in White Plains. NY.
My change to
watercolor came after my move to
Vermont and away from my dear
teacher/friend. I explored watercolor
with many teachers until I found the one
best suited for me. I had come to realize
that my professional background had
been grounded in planning, preciseness,
and control. I soon learned why some
watercolor methods were not satisfying
for me. My current teacher and mentor is
Gerarde Doucette of Charlestown, NH.

I am happiest
with all phases of my work when I take
the time to plan and execute my project.
My subject matter often involves people
or places that create an emotional
response in me. There is an irresistible
appeal of a brief moment in time that I
try to capture. My travels provide me with
those intimate encounters. Bob calls
some of my work "Nancy's
International Doorway Series." I
also love the grace and subtle colors of
flowers, and painting my grandchildren.
Great artists
of the past who have influenced me are
Sargent, Homer, and Wyeth. I greatly
admire Gretchen Rogers, Lillian Westcott
Hale, and Cecilia Beaux.
