Hi, my name is Leo
Salazar. I was born in 1942 in New York
City. At the age of thirteen, my art
teacher in public school asked me to take
an art proficiency test. I thought to
myself, are you kidding? To my
amazement, I passed and that began my
involvement in art. At the School of
Industrial Arts, I was exposed to many
art disciplines: pencil, charcoal, and ink
drawing, to watercolor and oil painting,
sculpting, and photography. In 1960, I
received the Youth Friends Association
Medal in art from the Metropolitan
Museum of Art. In 1970 I continued my
fine art education at Mercer County
Community College in NJ, then Trenton
State College in NJ.
I feel
the three artists that have influenced my
work the most are William Cherry, a
sculptor; Frank Rivera, a painter; and Mel
Leipzig, and internationally known artist,
all of whom I studied under.

If I
were to sum up my art in a statement
today, it would be: "As the human
condition evolves with every passing day,
so will my art. Every occurrence in my
life, every new technique I read about will
change my art, maybe not swiftly, but
most assuredly."
