"Watercolor satisfies an artist working under the pressure of our 21st century world while at the same time satisfying the viewer with an evocative, succinct impression of the world around us. With today's advanced chemistry, colors and techniques have never been more varied. I want to explore them all while achieving a picture that tells a story or offering a collector something rare and beautiful."

Annette Compton works in watercolor and pen & ink in quirky and interesting locations as well as employing a classical technique utilizing the unique properties of watercolor pigment when painting in the studio. She has made her living as a commercial artist doing design, illustration and instruction since 1986. Prior to that, she graduated with a BA in Art History from Wheaton College in Norton, MA in 1980. After college, she worked as a professional actress in New York, Off Broadway; studied and worked with Sidney Rapoport, an offset lithographer and later became Production Director of Art and Advertising for E. F. Hutton, Inc. She has designed and illustrated many books including the award-winning, God's Paintbrush now in its 9th printing from Jewish Lights. She received her MFA in Illustration in 1995 from the School of Visual Arts in New York, receiving the Paula Rhodes Award for distinguished work.
In November 2002, Watson-Guptill Publications is publishing a 12-lesson, 144 page full color book of her teaching titled, Drawing from the Mind, Painting from the Heart. Compton has taught workshops for Art in Provence for four seasons since 1997 and lead workshops to Bermuda, Wyoming and Florida. She teaches regular classes in watercolor, drawing, oil and acrylic in her studio in Woodstock called Compton ART. For a calendar of future workshops and a gallery of work go to www.comptonart.net.
