Education: B.S., M.S. Indiana University
Vocation: Art teacher, retired in 1996
Primary medium: Transparent watercolor
Since my retirement as a public school teacher I have dedicated more time to painting. In these past few years I have exhibited in national, regional, and local exhibits. I have also taught adult watercolor classes and I am a member of the Vermont Watercolor Society.
I like to think my painting will appeal to various levels of reception that range from the very literal to the more subjective interpretations. I have spent the majority of my life in rural settings and find myself most comfortable depicting that with which I am familiar. The subjects I select are ones that I believe represent the commonality of rural Vermont and Ireland of today but yet reflect a bit of nostalgia. I hope too that my paintings have enough of an edge to avoid merely becoming cliches or sentimental images.
I find transparent watercolor to be the most suitable medium for my subject matter. I enjoy the exactness that can be achieved within the fluidity of the medium. These paintings are done on 300 lb paper with moist watercolors.
